Nina G. is a fourth-year graduate student at the University of California San Diego.

She’s a student council member as well as a member of the Scientist Professional Advisory Committee (SciPAC) at her school. For this issue, Nina reviewed the app Mint.

What’s a movie you can watch over and over again?

I love the animated movie Paprika, directed by Satoshi Kon. It has a distinctive animation style that captures the surreal nature of dreams.


What are you reading right now?

Ghost Map, a nonfiction book by Steven Johnson about the cholera epidemic that swept through London and spurred public health, modern epidemiology, and modern urban planning. 


What’s your favorite holiday?

Thanksgiving! I’m always grateful for opportunities that involve food, friends, family, and fun.


If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

It’s a tie between two parks in Alberta, Canada: Banff National Park, which is a gorgeous national park in the Canadian Rockies, and Dinosaur Provincial Park, where there are dinosaur fossils at ground level and a world-class paleontology museum.


What was the name of your first pet?

My first pet was a betta fish. Since he was kept alone, I named him Alphard—Arabic for “solitary one.”
