When you’re on a student budget, those daily trips to the coffee shop can really add up. (A daily $3 coffee equals $1,095 a year. ?) But relax, coffee diehards. Making your own cold brew at home is easy, cost-effective, and just as delicious as what you get from your local café. You only need two ingredients and a few basic supplies to make a big batch that will fuel you through the week. This cold brew coffee recipe requires a bit of planning ahead, but your patience will pay off—the long steeping time yields a super-smooth, less acidic brew. Best of all? No waiting in line.

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup fine coffee grounds
  • Jar, pitcher, or pot with lid
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Paper coffee filters
  1. Mix coffee grounds and water in a large jar, pitcher, or pot.
  2. Once combined, cover with lid and store in the fridge for 12–24 hours.
  3. Use a fine-mesh strainer lined with a paper coffee filter to slowly drain the mixture into a bowl or another pitcher. This process can take up to 30 minutes, so have patience.
  4. Pour in a glass, add creamer, milk, or sweetener (if desired), top with ice, and enjoy!
