Contributor spotlight: Mark

by Amanda Holst0 Comments
Reading Time: < 1 minutes

Mark is currently studying information systems at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

He’s also a member of the IT club at his school. Mark reviewed content and provided feedback on this month’s issue.

How would your friends describe you?

My friends would say that I’m laid back. I make jokes—but I can also take jokes. They might also say that I’m motivated, someone who’s willing to try new things, and I’m always up for an adventure. I’d say that’s all pretty accurate!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

My first stop would be Yosemite National Park in California to climb the Half Dome, an infamous, grueling 14- to 16-mile hike. Being on top of mountains is where I find serenity, so climbing Yosemite would be an epic journey for me—even if it takes days and I’m drenched in sweat by the end of it.

Contributor spotlight: Alexis

by Amanda Holst0 Comments
Reading Time: < 1 minutes

Alexis is a third-year undergraduate at the University of Maryland in Baltimore studying psychology.

She’s the justice of her Student Hearing Board, a member of the Student Health Advisory Council, a relationship violence prevention advocate, and the secretary of Parent’s Club. For this issue, Alexis reviewed the app Sleep Cycle alarm clock.

What are some quirky or unusual facts about yourself?

I’m crazy good at spelling, I used to read the dictionary and quiz myself for fun. I also don’t like pie at all. Any and every kind. I just despise pie in general. I’m an advocate for naturopathy, and other integrative health practices. After graduation I plan to continue my education and become an applied forensic psychologist. Oh, and I’m ambidextrous.

How would you describe yourself? What would your friends say about you?

Personally, I think I’m hilariousâ€Ķwith an extra scoop of corny. I’d also say I’m creative, driven, open-minded, and pretty awkward sometimes. I think my friends would say I’m amusing, nerdy, and slightly dramatic.

Contributor spotlight: Zuriel

by laurenharris0 Comments
Reading Time: < 1 minutes

Zuriel R. is a second-year doctoral student at Portland State University in Oregon. She’s currently in the Earth, Environment, and Society PhD program. In this issue, Zuriel reviewed the podcast Invisibilia.

What’s your passion?

“I study human-wildlife interactions in cities. This means I spend a lot of time talking to people about their interactions with wildlife. I love to learn about the way people perceive wild animals, especially foxes, coyote, and wolves!”

What’s your favorite pastime?

“When I’m not talking to a homeowner about the coyote pups in their deck or mapping coyote sightings, I love to go for long walks in new and familiar places. Walking gives me a chance to appreciate the natural beauty of the city, to relieve stress, to come up with new ideas, and, sometimes, to listen to interesting new podcasts.”

Contributor spotlight: Kimberly M.

by Amanda Holst0 Comments
Reading Time: < 1 minutes

Kimberly is a third-year undergraduate at the University of Central Arkansas studying applied physics. She’s also the vice president of the Society of Physics Students chapter at UCA. For this issue, Kimberly reviewed the app MindShift.

How would you describe your personality?

“I think my personality can be described as friendly, yet I’m a bit shy when I first meet people. But I’ve improved through the years! I think I can be considered funny at times as well, but it’s mostly because I’m clumsy. I’m not complaining though as being clumsy can have its perks. The clumsiness makes me goofy so it’s entertaining and brings a lot of laughter.”

How do you chill out when you’re stressed?

“When I’m stressed, I’m a mess. I usually like to read a good book, listen to music, and watch funny or cute videos. There’s nothing like a good kitty or puppy video to cheer me up. I also can’t pretend that singing doesn’t help me chillâ€Ķeven if I’m not good at it!”

Contributor spotlight: Levent

by laurenharris0 Comments
Reading Time: < 1 minutes

Levent Guldal, third-year graduate student, Creighton University School of Pharmacy, Nebraska

For this issue, he reviewed Wunderlist, an app designed to keep us organized and making moves on our most demanding work (see How to be really good at getting stuff done, according to science).

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

“I’d go to Japan, in a heartbeat. I’m really into watching foreign films and some of my favorites ones are Japanese. Films like Seven Samurai, Audition, and Akira were very influential to me and provided a fascinating window into Japanese culture. I would love the chance to immerse myself in their culture and experience their traditions firsthand. I also wouldn’t mind getting to eat some delicious ramen and sushi while I’m there!”

How do you chill out when you’re stressed?

“Lifting some weights helps to calm me down and clear my mind. What keeps me in a good mood, however, is my six-year-old son. He’s the cutest, funniest, and kindest little boy you’ll ever meet. I love spending time with this kid! He has such an imaginative mind and puts his own twist on whatever we’re doing.”
